Any ideas?
« on: March 16, 2019, 10:18 »
Hi all, new to the allotment scene and this forum.

I’ve just taken over a plot with several excising plants which I’ve figured out what they are part from one bush! Can anyone tell what it is and whether it’s worth keeping please.

Difficult to say because you have taken a particularly close up photo but I'll take a stab at some sort of currant.. you are not showing the plant only the leaf buds!

I think it may well be some sort of currant (red or black?) because I have one where the older stems turn black as they age and the newer ones are lighter in colour. Still not sure though!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Hard to tell for sure but my guess would be gooseberry.

Rub the buds with your fingers and smell them, if it is blackcurrant you will be able to smell it.

Thanks all, I do have a pic that further away but it would post due to size. I’ll take another when I pop over today and try the leaf rubbing too!

Has it got thorns? That would suggest gooseberry. Otherwise I agree it is either blackcurrant or maybe redcurrant.

Looks like blackcurrant to me, agree if it's gooseberries then there will be very sharp thorns

I'm pretty sure it's not a gooseberry - there's no thorns and the bark is too dark in colour.

I agree with the others that it's a currant of some sort.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'd go for blackcurrant. Red & White currants have more pointed buds. Definitely not gooseberry.

Looks like Blackcurrant to me - can you prune a small bit and smell - no mistaking my blackcurrant when it was pruned.  Although time will tell
