growing tomatoes in singapore!!
« on: September 14, 2009, 19:48 »
My daughter lives in Singapore, and has managed  to sow tomato seeds, of which are now about 7" tall.  She can't get liquid tomato feed out there, and I can't take it out for her (liquid).  Is there any alternative feed.  I'm going out there next week and wondered was there any dried variety tomato food.  Its a massive achievement for anyone to have even germinated tomatoes out there, due to the heavy rain, and humidity. So I'd love to help her achieve fruits.

Potash is the element which is in high proportion in tomato fertiliser, and is available in dried form, so you could consider that.

However, do double check the import regulations - it's a white powder for a start!

P.S. I'll move this over to the Grow Your Own forum as that's what it's about LOL
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Surely you can take liquid tomato feed out in your hold luggage?  It is just liquids in hand baggage that is banned.

If you're thinking of taking out some fertilizer, then you're better of taking a dry product (no water to transport). And no risk of leakage in your luggage (the hold isn't pressurised ! )
I'm not sure what the standard products are in UK, but you should find it easily in a garden centre.
Who are you flying with?

Phostrogen would probably do the trick.

However I am surprised that there is not some kind of high potash plant food available in a sophisticated city like Singapore - even if it is not labelled as tomato food.  However you can grow tomatoes using ordinary plant fertiliser - they may not grow quite so well, but they should be OK.

I am wondering if she will have a problem with blight.  It is certainly favoured by heat and humidity, but the spores may simply not exist in that region.
