I've been contacted by Manor Farm Woodcraft who make wooden poultry housing, rabbit hutches etc. There's been quite an upsurge in people taking on ex-battery hens so they're offering a discount on their standard ark for people taking on ex-battery hens
More info on their website: http://www.manorfarmwoodcraft.co.uk/ark.php

thats very nice of them :)
-
Thats a good offer!! Good solid looking houses if a bit pricey but I guess you get what you pay for and they look built to last. Good to get them with wheels but you could also dismantle a sack truck from BandQ (and complete with bearings) we bought one on offer for £14.00 last year and just made a long axle for the wheels to fit the width of one of our henhouses.

There's a bloke on the River Cottage forum who wants to rescue ex battery chooks, but he doesn't need a poultry house he just needs an oven!!!!!!
He thought he would be giving them a better life if he rescues them, lets them live a nice life for 6 months, humanely dispatches them and then eats them!!!!!
To top it all, another stupid member agreed with him that they felt he was doing his bit to help the ex batts!!!!!!
World gone mad!!!!!!

And that's how Aunty feels about people eating their pet or rescued hens

Thinking about giving those hen a better future, where and who do you need to contact to give em a better future after their " best by" date. Where to start.

I've got a request out to some ex-battery hen people to get listed on the site.

I've got a request out to some ex-battery hen people to get listed on the site.
Sorry what does that mean. Do you mean people who provide homes for ex battery chickens :?:
Or do you mean people who used to farm "battery" fashion.
I count myself amongst the first ie: I have 3 ex bats.
-
Sorry - I meant I've asked some of the people who are involved in re-homing the ex-battery chickens to list. Not Bernard Mathews!

I can't understand how someone could. I very much doubt I could eat a bird brought up by me specifically for meat - I'd wimp out whatever I said initially. As for eating laying birds - keep an animal for years then eat it.. no.
My pal Annie had a laying flock of 40. The plan was to cull when they ceased laying prductively. She ended up with a retirement home for her girls and she's far tougher than I am.

Hi this is the address of our local co-ordinator (north west) for re homing ex battery hens.

I'm awaiting a reply from the BHWT - asked them about putting themselves on the list as I said above. Since you've copied there image which is on the net, I suppose it's OK but please - (to everyone) never post someone's phone number or email on a public web page. If it wasn't an image it would be picked up by spammers.

I have recently posted a subject about re-homing ex batts, and co-incidentally have been dealing with this supplier. Just to say they have been very helpful with good commincations via their web-site. I have placed an order for a 4 hen Ark. With delivery it comes in at just about 200 quid which represents a significant discount on the list price provided you can provide evidence that you need it to re-home hens form the BHWT. They also make a 45 pound donation to the Trust for every order. Will let you know about build quality etc but it looks good from the spec. Am expecting it before end Feb. Regards. Gareth

This is the place I got mine from. The one I bought is the Kenton with the run exactly like the one in the picture. I would recommend these
people to anyone. I was very fussy about the size and they were so patient.I also ordered some hens and they put me in touch with a
neig :D bouring farmer where I ordered them from. These people were kind enough to go and fetch them for me and delivered them. The houses are
solid and put together on site. The chap (father of the woman I was dealing with )didnt leave until I was really sure what I was doing with my
hens. They were brilliant.

How did i miss this thread :!:
I'm going to give them a call today.
-
Does anyone know where i can get hold of any ex battery hens as would prefer to rehome some rather than buy from a dealer?
-
We got our 4 girls from the BHWT in February my hubby mailed them, spoke to someone over the phone think this is standard to make sure you know what your doing etc and then reserved 4 for the pick-up day. They take donations for the birds think we gave £30.
Our 5th chicken was a road runner as my hubby calls her ::). The coop we got off Ebay it has the house above with run below and we're going to do a run extension for when we're away etc. But they get full run of the garden when we're around :)
