Title: Turbo cider
Post by: A. Fallowfield on July 02, 2009, 22:13
I bought more than enough Lidl (the dearer one) 1½ litre apple juice, 78p each.
I put 2 cartons at room temperature in a sterilised demi-john.
The only yeast I had was Wilko’s (Youngs) wine yeast.
I included a heaped teaspoon of yeast nutrient, a teaspoon of pectolase and a little squeeze of lemon juice. Plus 2 pound of sugar.
I use a sterilised plain bung so’s I can pick it up and give it a damn good shake!
Don’t leave the bung in though, unless you like loud bangs! Fit an air lock.
When the initial froth had died down (couple of days) I topped it up with more apple juice (not from the fridge!!!)
It will then go berserk again, so keep a spare, clean air lock ready.
It will ferment a long time and clear beautifully!

I took the first bottle down the plot so’s my mate could try it. It is seriously strong, I do mean strong!

Suppose you could always use a food grade plastic bucket, but you'd still need a top and an airlock otherwise you could end up with a lot of vinegar!
Freecycle's the best place for demi-johns.
I stopped mine frementing at seven weeks with camden tablets, it was perfectly clear too!

Well yes, but it is made with all apple juice, and I have wondered where scrumpy ends and apple wine begins!

I didn't realise Lidl did them that cheap

I thought I'd done well picking up 4litres from a local store at 65p each - Lidl next time!

I mixed the 4litres at room tempreature with about a 1lb of sugar, citric acid, yeast nutrient and wine yeast. It's been going for nearly a week and is starting to slow down now. It was clear apple juice, so the fermentation is not that cloudy. I'm sure it will be too strong to drink in pints

I've made Turbo Cider and it's rocket fuel.  :D

I also de-gassed Peartiser and used that, thinking I'd get Turbo Perry... it was turbo something.

Finally I did the same with Appla and Banana juice... don't bother.

The only juice in T*sco's is made from concentrate.

Is this ok?

I seem to remember reading that you couldn't use it for cider/wine.

You have to be careful with some fruit juices as they have a yeast inhibiter in them!
German regulations don't allow it, so I'm told. :D

I could never find pure apple juice, even from Aldi/Lidl so had to use the tesco from concentrate stuff. Did the job for me, but tasted a tad thin so added pure honey to it

Used the turbo cider method but used red grape juice instead. Just an experimental two litre batch. Fermenting nicely at the moment. I'll keep you posted.

Any thoughts about adding yeast nutrient to this maybe?

Hi You can get a 6% turbo cider drinkable if you like stilll cider in about a week two weeks if you prime for fizzy cider, you dont need extra sugar to achive this there is enough in store bought apple juice if you get 10% or more it is a apple wine not cider.......Fred

Go back to the first post where AF tells you what to. I've got two lots on the go. One with 2lbs of sugar, and one with 1lb. It really is that easy. Cleanliness and air lock essential though.

Post by: Fredjones on October 19, 2009, 20:44
Hi Catherine all you do is buy 5 litres of apple juice put 3 litres in demijohn add a teaspoon of yeast and away you go, when vigoriuos fermentation stops after a couple of days top up to kneck with the rest of apple juice whats left drink, it takes about a week as i said in first post if you want fizzy cider prime with half a teaspoon of sugar per pint wait another week and enjoy-----Fred

Mine's still, so I've used screw top wine bottles. Fizzy mineral water bottles would work, so long as you don't pit too much sugar in to prime them. Half a teaspoonful per litre?

I use the plastic bottles you get flavoured water in from tesco, any bottle like that is fine. I'd prob put a bit more than half a teaspoon in, as I use half for 500mls

hi all
i make my own wine and i am going to have  a go at making turbo cider i have bought 4 litres of tesco pure apple juice from concentrate i am led to believe that if you boil it first that gets rid of any additives would this work.
cheers

If there are additives in your apple juice it will say on the carton usualy if it is ok for vegitarians it is additive free, i have used tescos apple juice and it was additive free----Fred

Turbo cider is called turbo because it ferments quickly and that is because you use the sugar in the juice the more sugar you use the longer it takes and if you get it to 12% or higher it is apple wine not cider----Fred
Title: Re: Turbo cider
Post by: Fredjones on December 04, 2009, 23:24
This is Turbo cider

"Well this is as easy as it gets! (called Turbo Cider as it's so quick and easy).
Ingredients:
4.5 of pure apple juice
1 tsp yeast

Method:
1. Place 3 litres of Apple Juice into a demijohn (assuming everything is sterile)
2. Place 1 tsp yeast into the demijohn
3. Shake
4. Leave for 36-48 hrs to ferment then top up with remaining of the juice( can't fill right up at the start as it will foam quite a bit)
5. Leave to ferment out
6. Rack off and drink ( or if you like cider fizzy then prime as usual)

I thought I would try this out and I was very pleased with the results, it is sssooooo easy.

I used Tesco Value apple juice and SG was 1.042 so no sugar was necessary ( to get 5.5%-ish) but if you want cider stronger add sugar/honey or whatever.

Very good for a beginner  and an expert alike"

bit of a beginners question here  :)

I have 2 gallons of cider on the go started on the 8th dec. only occasional bubbles through air lock do I have to wait for it to clear before putting it into bottles ? (i did add some honey to the apple juice before I started!)
Thanx
Title: Re: Turbo cider
Post by: Scribbler on December 15, 2009, 12:22
You can monitor clarity by shining a torch into the side of the container. If it looks to be getting progressively clearer then wait as long as you can. As far as fermentation is concerned, keep the airlock on until you can see any bubbles. The torch is useful for this too I find.

I've got three lots on the go. One with 2 lbs of sugar, one with 1 lb of sugar and another smaller container which is just fermented juice with no sugar added. Also have three lots of wine, each with a pound of sugar. One red grape juice, one white grape juice and one red and white mixed. All are clearing nicely.

Next experiment is to try using Golden Syrup. May sound a bit strange, but have used this in the past in beer-making. I used a standard lager kit, followed the instructions, but added a tin of Golden Syrup at the end. Then racked off into primed screw top cider bottles. No explosions, mercifully. Tasted great!!

My turbo cider cleared but it was too dry so I added sugar and of course it started to ferment again. How can I sweeten it? CC
Title: Re: Turbo cider
Post by: Scribbler on December 16, 2009, 09:16
I think you use Campden tablets to stop fermentation, but I have never used these. Also used for sterilisation, they kill off micro-organisms - including the live yeast. See further up the thread. Someone mentions this. I think you can use these without affecting the final flavour, as opposed to other sterilisation  substances such as sodium metabisulphite which may not be suitable.

Anyone expand on this please?

Cheers.

Well i started my "not so" turbo cider last week.
Absolutely nothing going on in the demijon.
I've made all sorts of wines and beers before some with great success and some with out right disgusting results, so i like to think i kinda know what im upto.

But like i said, one week on and nothing.
I got my apple juice, Princes pure from concentrate, checked the ingredients and it said water and apple concentrate, nothing else.
i poured three litres into the demijon added yeast neutrient an pectolas, and finally yeast.
Shook the contents vigoruisly a few times fitted an air lock and placed it on a rug just to the side of one of the radiators.
does anyone know what i've done wrong.
I was hopeing it would have been ready for Christmas. :(
