Munty frame quick question
« on: May 23, 2012, 13:40 »
Hi Everyone
It's my first year building a Munty frame for my beans, all is going well but I'm just wondering if twine is going to be strong enough for the beans to grow up.  Already the twine is sagging without anything planted. Hope someone can help and stop me making a beginners mistake.
Thanks Julia

Is it natural twine? I think most people favour polypropylene string or even washing line

I use coire it's good and it's cheap.  They sell it at my garden centre.  It looks like this:

I found jute and cotton twine to be useless. They broke after a month or two. I stick with poly twine now. I managed to get a big box of baling twine cheap from an auction and will continue to use that. It'll last for at least 3 years before starting to wear.

Thats what i use.  Mines on its 3rd year and no sign of any wear at all :)

Last week I put jute around my peas  because it looked nice being green in colour and its stretched already. :( I'm going to replace it with the blue baler twine.

I prefer natural twine wherever possible but this is one of those situations where I think it will sag (esp after getting wet) or even snap...

but then I'm not a Munty boy, I'm a Kristen's X-framer  :)

I am going to be using the nylon / polypropylene stuff this year.  Last year I tied my X frame together with natural twine, and it either rotted or was pecked at by birds within a few months.  Luckily there was enough other twine holding some bits together so it didn't collapse completely, but I'm not risking it this year with my first Munty  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I use cable ties to hold my munty frame together.

As Munty himself would say: "Werks fer me"

That's what I've used this year, and used partially last year!

Need to get the twine to do the strings bit still, though.  After putting the frame up, I then weeded the plot for hours - enough to fill a small/medium wheelie bin !!
