Aquadulce Broad Beans
« on: November 25, 2011, 16:42 »
I sowed my winter broad beans on the 1st November. Due to the exceptional mild weather here in Devon they are now 30cm tall and unlikely to survive the winter.

Should I pinch them out down to 10cm?

First snowdrops out today!!!!

I thought mine were bad enough, sown on 19th October and now 8-9 inches high as of yesterday.

If you pinch the tops I don`t think they will regrow. Yours and mine will have to take their chance I`m afraid.

Next year mine will be sown three weeks later.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

they are frost hardy but it has been very mild may be a light covering of fleece may help with the first frosts but don't take my word for it  :)

I think I would try to give them some support to help keep them upright in strong winds over winter.

If the tops are nipped out they might send out side-shoots in the spring. Perhaps trying just a few would be worth it for next time. You could see which works best. (I think I'd try that).

I decded not to plant Autumn sown BB. In previous years the crop has been slightly earlier but not huge compared to spring sown varieties.
Good luck.
