cardboard in raised bed?
« on: April 15, 2011, 17:22 »
Hi
I have just begged a wooden frame lined with cardboard that a friend had a fancy shower unit delivered in. It's ideal size and is lined with cardboard. Once I've decided where to put it, should I cut the cardboard from the bottom to allow roots to go into ground? I've heard of people putting cardboard into raised beds so wasn't sure. The frame is about six inches deep. Not sure what to grow in it yet.

You can leave it in, but you will need to thoroughly water it to allow it to rot down before you can plant into it.  You could also score it to help it along.

It all depends on how thick it is.

You could plant through it - it might help keep the weeds down

Downside to using cardboard as a mulch/weed barrier is that it tends to turn into a haven for slugs to hide under, so on personal preference I would put 6" soil on top of c'board as a minimum

It sounds to me as though the best bet is to remove it with a sharp knife before I start

thanks for replies
