Has it been left for long periods with fuel in the tank and carb?these modern small engine carbs are so finely balanced between air and fuel that any gum left by standing fuel can mess thing up.
is the choke /primer working properly?

U probably flooded it, use a little choke next time if you have one, sorry im in to car engines so i dont know how they work much, some are auto choke probably, you need to put a little clean oil on that sponge filter as well, the dust particles will stick to it then, but dont soak it about a small tea spoons worth is all you need at most and then just squeeze the sponge and work the oil in to it, a dry sponge filter is not a good thing

I worked as an engineer on hire machines so can boast experience on small and large engines.
I bought one of those Chinese tillers mainly because the engines are a copy of Honda type.
With all four strokes I always turn off the fuel to stop the engine if its going away for the winter, jet was and dry the tiller, oil cables, bolts and moving parts then empty the oil, leaving the filler plug taped to the choke mech on handle bars.
Before I bought this tiller, I owned a 60s merry and here is the comparison:-

MERRY                                                     CHINESE
Heavy                                                       Does bounce over hard dry clods.
Temperamental                                          Starts on first pull
Difficult to manoeuvre                                 Turn it on a sixpence
parts easy to get                                         don't know, not needed any yet

both are good 5hp motors and both do the job, I have had this one for 2 years digging a 110ft by 70ft several times a year.
So there you have it, keep the Mantis for window boxes , these are a usable replacement for the trusty red devils.

Please note, NEVER RUN A 2 STROKE DRY if you have to mix the petroil.
Huge thanks
