am i just completely sad, or is this normal?
« on: May 24, 2009, 16:19 »
Hello guys.
I was just hanging my washing out and o/h has been is absolute fits of laughter at the fact that I wash and re use J cloths?
Ok.... they are not expensive but it seems pointless throwing them away after one use.
Surely I.m not the only one that washes J cloths? Or am I? .......lol :D

I don't use them much Janet as they are too thin, but I wouldn't throw them away after one use. That's just silly!  Mind you, I don't think I'd put them in the washing machine, might break up in there???    :)

Just tell OH you are being thrifty!!!

Actually Janet is being the sensible one here.

Dishcloths harbour more bacteria than just about any other place in the house including the kitchen bin, unless you kill the bacteria by, boiling, and/or drying them out between uses. Rinsing them out in warm and possibly dirty water, and leaving them damp creates the ideal environment for breading bacteria, and spreads it from one wash to the next.

By all means re-use cloths, no need to throw money away, and there is also no need to become paranoid about cleanliness and bacteria, we only live because of the stuff, and it only gets to become a problem in really bad conditions (Killing off good bacteria can also be a problem, as it lets the bad stuff take over).

The best plan is to have two or three cloths on the go, one in use, one drying off and one clean and ready to take over from the first.

Should have mentioned that I only use them as dusters.  The dishes get a nice spongy scoury thing.

J cloths are washable which was their initial use. It's only when some smarty ad exec decided to boost sales that they tried to convince the public that they were disposable after one use...and succeeded for the most part. But I'd draw the line at ironing them  ::)

The absolute worst offender for bacteria retention are sponges.
