help chicken balti been injured by other hen
« on: May 22, 2010, 15:35 »
:( unsure what to do, have just come back from shopping and balti has blood all over her head. I have washed off all the blood I can and applied cornflour to the wound turned out to be a wound inbetween her comb and beak. I put her back in the run and nasty tikka has pecked her again. Do I remove her and put her into another run? I am worried that the sod will hurt her even more :( :(.
I have heard that if you remove hens I may not be able to put her back ................

I would try removing the agressive hen for a few days.  Try to make sure she can still see the other hens during the day.  When you put her back she will have lost her status as top bossy hen.

Oh dear, a little blood does go a long way  :(

It would be best to remove her from the other hens if she has or is likely to have blook on her.  Red is a magnet for chooks to peck at.

Keep her in sight of the others.

Some Veterinary Wound Powder (that's what it's called) would help to heal the injury quickly-it's miracle stuff.  Love your chickens' names, by the way!

Before I read your last message aunt sally I cleaned Balti up (again) removed the pecker Chicken Tikka and put Balti back. I drove up to the chicken supplier and bought some anti peck spray and some purple spray along with another drink and food container for the "pecker". Balti hasn't bleed any more (the wonders of cornflour) and bhuna hasn't touched her they seem fine with the "pecker" watching from the other run.

I was going to leave Tikka in solitary confinement until tomorrow - should I do it for longer?

good news so far, Bhuna hasn't touched Balti and Tikka is still in solitary - though I do feel sorry for her :(. I dabbed some purple spray all on the sore bits on Balti head , I didn't want to spray as it was close to her eyes - she looks like a punk with a purple mohican  :D :D and I also sprayed them all with anti peck spray.

She seems fine and has now gone to bed - I will check her early tomorrow as I am worried Bhuna may have a go if they are drawn to blood.

You've done well cheriton.

I'd just keep an eye on them tomorrow and see how Balti goes.  Keep Tikka away for a few days and then try them together again but be on guard for a while.

if it keeps happening then I would fit an anti peck beak clip to Tikka.
Staffies are softer than you think.

The night went well, Balti is still in one piece eating drinking and looking happy. Bhuna laid this morning so things must have gone well in the coop last night :D :D

I still feel sorry for Tikka but she is chirpy this morning and can see the other girls.

Thank you for the advice Aunt Sally , Joyfull and Maeve.

Where would I get an anti peck beak clip from?
