Safe Keeping.....?
« on: June 07, 2013, 02:51 »
Can you spread some light on this for us please?

Up in the attic there are countless demi-johns full of homemade wine. It's been there for quite a while!!

My father wants me to ask: Is it likely to be safe to drink?

I have instructions to visit my dad's old bungalow and bring back a few jars to try out.  He keeps reminding me so there's no putting it off.  ::)

It's probably been up in the attic for the last 10 to 15 years....or more. It's covered with layers of felt but subject to changing temperatures.

I guess there will be beetroot and tea wine as well as a range of other things like elderberry and parsnip. It was one of my father's hobbies when he retired just over 30 years ago. He made some wonderful wine.

Only one way to find out, Paul, isn't there!

If the demijohns have cork bungs, and are presumably standing upright, there may be a problem, because as you say, temperatures vary widely in a roof space, and they could have shrunk the dryer they got. So that would mean that air would possibly have got in, and caused contamination. If they're rubber, then there could be a different result, and you could strike lucky.

Be careful opening them, as although they may have been stored when finished, there could just have been some secondary fermentation, and while demijohns don't take pressure, you could get a bit of spray...

Sounds like an intriguing project, there could just be some gems there!
