Wilko garden arch - how good are they?
« on: March 25, 2014, 07:25 »
I snaffled a Wilko garden arch last year in their sale, reduced to £3, not sure what to do with it but couldn't walk past it in the shop. Have now put it together and it needed glue in a few places as the rivets were a bit dodgy but nevertheless it's standing up ok. I plan to bury it in a raised bed up to about 18" and then trail cucumbers up it, or if I can get some more, making a bean tunnel.
Has anyone else used these arches and if so, what for and did they stay up?
Thanks in advance.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

They only last a couple of years really  :(

Mine is still standing after 4 years but it's duck taped and wired to various long bits of wood and canes - it's not a pretty sight  ::)

I have some that stood up to this year's gales on our very windy plot --- they have a fence pin driven in deep by each leg, to which they are very firmly attached with cable ties.

Two have climbing roses on (substantial wind resistance) but it stayed up this winter.

You get what you pay for, quality wise, but if you give them some extra support they do the job for while

I've got some fence pins so will attach arch to them. Thought I might put a blackberry on it but if they don't last for long will go back to cucumber idea.

Job done then. Thanks everyone.
I will be putting it in place this weekend and test it out as the site does get a bit windy.

Drive those fence pins down well and they should do the job  :)
