Onions again
« on: March 23, 2012, 13:38 »
prior to Christmas i planted some over wintering red and white onions can't recall names of them am still very much a novice, anyway the whites have survived but the reds have all but vanished, not one has taken and most of them are'nt even there now?
where or what did i do wrong?

also how is the best way to look after onions while they are growing, is it best to loosen the earth up around them so they can expand?
what about feed do they need anything in particular

thanks

gone??!!
considering the mild winter we had I assume you should have a nice sprout now but dont know how it is gone.. gone.. I assume they've rotten.
on the caretaking of onion dont need to loosen the soil.. they know how to grow. feed with normal feeds you have (I used chicken pellets, and some horsemanure). They dont sulk on feeding. if you add potash (good woodash) you will get good produce.  :).
and remember to water them during dry periods. they have very shallow roots and they get distressed and bolt if they see sun for a week.  :)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

You are not alone, if it's any consolation  ::)

I've only got a few left from my overwintering onions, and they were white ones :(
Garlic which is the next row, is fine............

Same happened to mine, I assumed it was birds pulling them out. I think I had about four left from a short row and they weren't doing very well either. Not going to bother overwintering them next year.

Is it too late to plant onion seeds?  Only just discovered a packet lurking in my seed box

I think reds are often more unreliable than whites; by all means start again with spring growing sets.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
