When is the best time to take cutting from gooseberry bushes.
I tried in October and failed to get one to take.
Thanks in advance
John

They are very easy to layer, just allow a branch to grow and bend it down to ground level.  Peg the branch under the soil (or put a stone on top) and next year you'll be able to snip off and lift the new plant.  If you miss pruning one year you'll probably find that the plant will have managed to layer itself - at least that's how I've managed to collect new plants this spring, as well as several seedlings that I'll leave to see how they turn out.

Judging by the amount of seedlings that come up all over my garden, courtesy of the birds, they must be pretty easy to grow from seed as well :)

Thanks again for the replies
I may try layering in the back end I only have one bush put in about about two months ago it has not fruited this year but it is only about two feet tall but looks very healthy. It is in well matured soil and given a dose of pot ash . John

Mine managed to layer themselves from low down branches -- plot neighbour was happy to have the babies  :D
