Advice required.
« on: October 24, 2022, 17:15 »
As you can see from the photo I posted, quite a spread of young weed has come up on the section of my plot that couldn't be covered by the manure delivered. I decided to give a small section a good thick layer. My question is: would the young weed growth be viable as a green manure, and if it is, how would it be best to go about it. I am thinking that just digging it in would not be any good as my limited experience tells me that the roots would grow again and I'd be back to square one. Your help is always appreciated by me.

Personally I’d just hoe that off then rake it up & compost it. I’ve never really got on with green manures but they tend not to be “weeds” more usually rye, phacelia, mustard etc

As Snows says, and it makes a good compost as there's always a bit of damp soil stuck to the stuff, so a winner all round!

I did that just a few days ago!

Ok, so no use as green manure. Could the hoeing off and raking up be explained a bit more? I would have thought hoeing the stuff would chop and leave root in the ground.....just waiting to grow back again.

Most weeds that grow like that are annuals, so raking over and lifting it for the compost bin works, as does chop and drop composting.
Only a few perennial weeds may grow back from the roots and can be easily dug out during Spring cultivation.
