Growing Tea @ the Allotment
« on: May 17, 2016, 23:00 »
i was reading this article http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/17/storm-in-a-teacup-as-gardeners-realise-uk-climate-is-perfect-for/   that basically spoke about growing a tea plant at home

apparently even though a lot of tea comes from China,India and Sri Lanka its grown there in hilly country with climate similar to England.

does any one grow tea plants on their allotments ? and where can i get some?

Tea is a camellia and demands similar conditions.

Just buy tea bags...it's a lot less hassle. Life is far too short to grow your own tea.

Same could be said of onions, potatoes, carrots, cabbage etc. Take no notice, go for it.

Just think how impressed all you visitors would be with a cuppa from your plot.

Not sure of my facts here. I think green tea is just drying the fresh leaves whereas with black tea, as found in tea bags, the leaves are allowed to ferment before drying. Can fresh leaves can be infused without drying?

I agree.  Gardening is about pleasure as well as food production and if growing tea sparks your curiosity, go for it  :)

Not sure about black tea, but I did see something on a programme on NHK the other day about green tea.  The lady lived in Japan and had a tea plant in her garden.    She picked the fresh tea shoots and dried them in a pan over low heat on the stove, then crumbled the leaves to make home made green tea.  It was drunk with great relish as a special treat.

Have a look on the Eden Project site, they had tea shrubs growing a few years ago. They might even sell them. I think it takes a lot of leaves as I think I'm right in saying they only use the very new tiny leaves for tea leaves.
A woman's place is in her garden.

........ I think I'm right in saying they only use the very new tiny leaves for tea leaves.

That is correct , hence PG Tips.

Low budget tea was reputed to be made from older, coarse leaves.
