Stopping ducklings eating woodshavings
« on: August 12, 2009, 15:54 »
Hi,

I've got three, 2 week old, Khaki Campbell ducklings which I've kept on straw up til now.  I've just bought some Easibed which is horse bedding but also recommended for poultry.  Trouble is, they keep eating it.  It is finer than wood shavings but really quite woody and sharp.  I've put them back on straw for now but does anyone have any experience of this or ideas of what to do about it?

I'm new to this so any advice gratefully received.

Thanks,
Christina

Mine have always been on hemcore which is similar. I keep it covered with a towel for the first few days and then just let them be. They have a bit of a go at it to begin with but then get bored when they realise it doesn't taste of much and there are better thinks about. Generally find it much better than straw so I never worry about it too much and haven't had any problems.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Agree with Kate, I use old tea towels, then move on to easibed after about a week, they do try and nibble on them but never had a problem :D

I use it beneath the straw as the straw gets very wet and the easibed is very absorbant.
My runners are coming up to 5 weeks now. I'll probably dispense with the straw altogether shortly. I've only just started leaving them out at night so have kept with the straw to keep them cosy   (worried mummy duck you see)  :(

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the great response, I'll bite the bullet and just put them on the Easibed when the straw runs out!
