Title: Where do these strange adverts come from?
Post by: Goosegirl on October 23, 2017, 14:20
I often see what seems un-related products advertised on here but just now I've seen one for Brylcreem! How do they get on here?

Typically they use places you visited or searches you have made in the past, and then a clever bit of programming makes "judgements" about products you might like to buy, these things are getting ever more clever. So for instance the more advanced techniques can use places you visit and search phrases you use say in google and take a stab at your age the sort of salary bracket you might be in and then offer typical products for those groups of people

Install Ad Block Plus. gets rid of most of them.

There are implications to ad block,  which are worth a small mention as ARPoet suggests it’s a good way to deal with unwanted Ad's. However if you visit small user based sites, or sites you value it may be that the only way they can run the website is on the small revenue the ads generate. For those sites ad blocker is not kind, there are some ethical ad blockers that try to adjust for this but it normally requires user intervention, what sites to operate on or not etc.

Some versions of Adblocker do allow you to choose which sites to allow ads on and which not to.

It can also be an interesting way to know what the rest of the household is up to!   ???  Why am I getting ads for new computers (he's dreaming again!), or ovens (me) or books (someone is trying to find a birthday present ...?) etc etc.

Brylcream?  That could lead to an interesting conversation!!   Is someone thinking about whisking you away to a 50's / vintage weekend, jivin' the night away??

By coincidence, I was wondering how I have so many adverts for lacy clothing? Dresses, blouses etc, not underwear, I say quickly!

What on earth have I searched for that led the site to think this is what I might want to buy??? Enviromesh, maybe......... The mind boggles 🤣🤣🤣

I was looking at sites for lights for the kitchen, the sort that you used to be able to get, which lowered over the central table or workspace.

The ads are all over the place now, and with the lights at £3,000 a pop, are likely to stay just there...

But Brylcreem Goosey...

Hmmm...

Exactly! Why Brylcreem especially as I don't have any antimacassars or ant-Brylcreemers. Has Santa hacked my PC and is having a larf??  :)
