direct into the soil in greenhouse?
« on: February 15, 2013, 13:39 »
hi all,i'm going to plant my toms and cues direct into the soil this season instead of pots.it is fresh ground and the soil looks ok.i wondered if this was a recommended method of growing in a green house and what preparation of the soil is needed.  do you get better results this way? any thoughts and advice would be helpful.thanks  :)

I always grow in the soil  ;)

Just improve it with compost/manure/fertiliser and away you go. Things manage with less attention to watering when grown in the soil, as the roots can grow much deeper  :)

Double ditto, plus I grow mine in pots with the bottom cut out to give them an extra bit of depth (and it's easier to pull them out when they're finished fruiting).  :)

I've always grown in soil in my mum's greenhouse and now doing so at my Lottie polytunnel.
Just as mumofstig says, "improve it with compost/manure/fertiliser".

I grow direct in soil in both greenhouse and polytunnel so can get some rotation - I always use bottomless pots 10 inch on top of soil and/or those double ringed culture pots intended for use on top of growbags that allow extra stem length in soil and easier watering. Toms go very well and so do cues, peppers, aubs etc. Can also rotate with legumes this way and as other said lots and lots of compost etc. Be careful about spacing - give yourself room to work.
I plant salad stuff between plants and also basil (so we have it ready when toms are for soups etc) and tagentes as deterrent for white-fly.
