What house should I get
« on: April 21, 2013, 09:51 »
Some chicken keepers I know have said to me that the solway smart hen house is going to be to big for 5 hens. They said the hens will get cold cause it being so big. They said for me to get the greenfrog http://www.greenfrogdesigns.co.uk/Chicken-Lodge-Medium-p/cg02.htm  not sure about that one.

It all depends how many & what you are looking at getting.
Remember you have to clean it out so don't get one with a small opening as you'll find it difficult.
I think it's something like 8 to 10 inches per medium size bird on the perch.

They only sleep & lay in the coop so you can have more than one perch for them.
Two two foot perches should be enough for six medium birds.
One nesting box for three birds so two nesting boxes will be plenty

The coop we have would be perfect for your needs. We have this http://www.solwayrecycling.co.uk/recycled-shop/pig-poultry/hen-houses/standard-eco-hen-house
I chose to have two perches and the solid floor. We raised it off the ground with concrete blocks. I love this coop and the hens prefer it over the eglu classic and our wooden coop.

I dont think they will get too cold. My coop is much bigger and i have 4 hens in it at the moment.

They will huddle together for warmth and there is a member on here who has chickens roosting in trees even during the winter.

Dont rush into buying anything. If you are still unsure, give it a bit more thought.

The first coop i bought was the size for the number of birds i wanted. I soon had to replace it though because it wasnt big enough
