Where's best to plant horseradish and Blood dock
« on: April 13, 2009, 17:36 »
I was passing a garden center i had never been in and dicided to try it, suprisingly it wasn't busy at all, ( the Bank holidayers musn't be able to find it ::) ).

i picked up Horseradish as i've been trying to find it for a while, and a new plant i had never heard of a " blooming Dock [ RUMUS - sanguineus ]. lovely blood viened leaves,
i only grow things which are easy or i hav had success with in the past, and i like to companion plant.
The question i have is will these 2 plants go well together and grow well in between rhubarb and sage? its the only place i have left for them.
Thanks. Arran.

Wherever you decide to grow horseradish, keep it far away from anything you want to keep as it makes roots to China and is almost impossible to get rid of later. Don't put it too close to rhubarb which will eventually overshadow it literally with its large leaves.
I'm not familiar with blood dock.

China is in fact the best place to grow it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Horseradish will grow almost anywhere - it's a real survivor and is often found on overggrown plots holding its own with even the most vigorous weeds so you can put in a corner out of the way so it does swamp other things.

blooming dock ( red-veined Sorrel ) is a much smaller plant and could easily be overshadowed by the horseradish. It will grow in full sun or part shade but does not like to dry out - in fact it does best where damp and can even be grown as a pond plant.
Young leaves can be added to salads or cooked like spinach.
You can let it flower if you want more plants or cut off flower stems to keep leaf production
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!
