Coop Insulation - Good idea?!
« on: February 23, 2012, 17:00 »
Hi,

Should I put insulation in my home made coop?  Getting my plans together just now and it seems like a good idea to have double walls with some thin-ish insulation between.  The walls would be well sealed to stop mites etc moving in.

Should keep things warmer in winter and more stable in summer.  Any coops I've seen have pretty thin walls with no insulation other than the bedding.  I know chickens can handle the cold but that doesn't mean I can't try to make things a bit more comfortable.

Any thoughts?!

Check this thread first.  A friend of mine used thermal imaging on her chickens in the snow and they weren't cold at all, in fact it might cause more harm if they are too warm.

Never bothered with mine, and I read chickens cope with colder temp's better than hot. But I may be wrong..Aden..

Ours is insulated how you suggest. I never shut the door to their house only the run ( completely fox proof). The door is at the back of the side so they don't get a draught and the insulation made me feel better about leaving the door open. This way the girls can get up I the mornings whenever they feel like.

I can only echo what has been said - they do not need insulation. i have quite a few that sleep all year round in the trees which just goes to show that they do not need any extra heating.

If you can insulate to avoid very high and very low temperatures without leaving spaces for red mite to infest it would be a good thing but not really essential for the hens.

just make sure your coop is the right size for the number of hen you get, waterproof, draughproof, foxproof and well ventilated and they will be fine...
