would this work?
« on: November 28, 2011, 17:29 »
im toying with the idea of making a large propagator on the bench in my greenhouse.
by putting an old electric blanket under some polythene sheet, covered either in sand or compost to stand pots on,with plastic waterpipe to make a bubble wrap cover.
does anyone think this would not work before i start construction or has anyone done this themselves?.
i dont suffer with insanity..........i enjoy every minute of it.

It would be far safer to use the proper heating cables which are, by design, built to be left on indefinitely in humid conditions.......... ;)

I wouldn't. :)

I'm definitely no expert Dave, but I'd worry about condensation and electricity in the same location, and of gourse, you'd have to water the pots as well.

I know electric blankets of old were just about waterproof, but I think I'd be nervous about this one, although it's a splendid idea in concept!

You can get heater wire (or used to be able to get it), so what you're really saying is does the electric blanket do the same. I think heater wire is very much insulated, as the elements in an electric blanket, but, I'm probably going to say 'Don't go there...'

Good point, but old people often wear absorbent pants, seed trays don't. ;) Their bedrooms aren't often swimming in water either........

The savings just don't justify the risks, but if you do go ahead with it, how about naming me as a beneficiary in your will? ;) :D :D

I love your lateral thinking, but I would leave the blanket to stand your demijohns on when winemaking !    ::)  Cheers,    Tony.

Electric blankets do say not to use if they get wet.
