Somewhat OT: Screen Roll
« on: October 02, 2011, 10:04 »
Thought I would post this in the general garding spot. Hope it's okay.

Instead of putting up a fence, I'm thinking of using a screen that you buy in a roll.

I'm looking for recommendations, or what to stear clear of.  I'm hoping a screen will last 3 or 4 years.  Thanks.

P.S. I'm looking at bamboo at the moment.

I assume that you don't mean a planted screen, but just screening made out of natural material?

I've got bamboo screening and it's lasted about 4 years or so now; I think it'll do another year.  Just make sure it's well fastened to supports all along its length.

I'll also move this over to Design & Construction as it's about materials rather than planting.  (I'll move it back if you do mean a living hedge instead).
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi. Yes, I mean a non planted screen.

The posts at the back are about 6 feet apart. I see that I will have to make sort of rungs between the posts, near top and bottom, so that the screen can be attached along it's length.

Yes, I would definitely recommend something like that or strong wire.  Mine is against railings so there are regular uprights to attach it to.

We have some at the end of our garden (bamboo slivers on a roll, like Yorkie mentioned) 2m high that has been in place for about 10 years. It is not battered by the wind at all though.

We like it is so much we are goin to use it at the end of our plot to act as a wind break, with heavyish posts and wire to hold it up.

Some bargains on ebay  ;) :)
