Sweetcorn in the greenhouse
« on: September 07, 2011, 16:38 »
Having been successful in previous years, and having run out of the variety I used (forgotten which one but can't get it now), the replacement one hasn't produced anything this last two years. Recommended on here is "Swift" which I shall get but, if the summers are anything like this last one, could I be successful growing them in my greenhouse bed? We don't seem to be successful with tasty toms either so might just grow one cherry-type so will have room for about 6 sweetcorn plants.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Have a look at the method that I use in Glasgow for growing sweetcorn outside very successfully every year.  Yes, you can grow it inside but you will need to hand pollinate by shaking the pollen tassels when the pollen is mobile.

I've had tremendous success this year with sweetcorn in the polytunnel. The insects pollinated it for me too as I leave the door open during daylight. Previous attempts in open ground were hit and miss due to the strong winds we get here

Sweetcorn is wind pollinated Alan, so the wind must have wooshed in through the open door and done the deed for you  :D

Unless it was minipop, which we grew in the polytunnel this year.  :)

About 18 inches apart - staggered. 6 plants, as the polytunnel is only little, to leave room for other things such as a few Inca tomatoes and one of the cucumber plants among other things.  :)

Think he was probably referring to the instructions under "sweetcorn" in the alphabetical "veges" index (I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong.)  :)
