Mites in Straw
« on: August 03, 2011, 21:26 »
Forgive me if this already on here.
We recently purchased some straw bales for our chicks.  After the first time of changing the bedding with the new straw we noticed some (loads) of mites crawling on us.  The only place it could have come from is the straw.  Is there any way of getting rid of the mites?  We don't really want to have to purchase any more.  Is there a spray we can put on it or a special trick to do?  We keep it in the greenhouse, it's currently more water tight than the shed.   :)
THanks

what sort of mites? I never use straw as the stems are good holes for mites and lice to hid in - so really any spray would not work. I hate to say it but personally I wouldn't use it knowing that they are living in it  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Did you see where the straw came from. Were there chickens roaming around. If so it's likely that the bales of straw have been infected with red mite. Get rid of the straw. Do not use it anywhere on your property. Do a search for red mite on this site. There are loads of posts about the problem. Good luck!
