Girl with upset tummy
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:57 »
One of my girls has an upset tummy, her poos are runny and her feathers on her bottom are all wet.

I put it down to the poor care they got while we were on holiday for two weeks (employed a local company to look after them got back to find they had no food their water container were stone dry and one a a think layer of algae growing in it!!)  Anyway her tummy hasn't cleared up.  In herself she is fine bright eyed, still laying absoultely hude eggs!  Is there anything i should do or just let it clear up by its self?

Also is there a good link for symptoms, causes and treatments so i can bookmark it for the future.

Many thanks

yes wash her in warm water and use a mild shampoo - baby shampoo will be ok. Then towel dry her and if it is cool out use a hair dryer to dry her feathers off - on a warm not hot setting.

Warm soapy water towel and blow dry.  It's only cosmetic but she'll appreciate it I'm sure.  Just give her lots of cool clean water and preferably with an electrolyte in it.  your other hens can drink it too.

Dissolve in 3 litres of water

5 ml of Salt substitute, (1 teaspoon of potassium chloride)
7.5 ml (1 and a half teaspoons) of Bicarbarbonate of soda (baking soda)
15 ml (3 teaspoons) salt

Don't start feeding her with probiotic yogurt and garlic etc things she's not used to just the plain old layers and a handfull of corn at night and she should return to normal.  Use the KISS principle.

of course if she is used to garlic, ACV, or even vitamin drops etc in her water then keep giving her them if you wish. If mine ever get runny poohs etc then I do give a probiotic but I use Aviproplus which is a probiotic developed for birds - no lactose involved  :)

That's terrible! I hope you haven't paid this company! Chickens don't need very much looking after, just food and water really. I bet they still collected the eggs.

I hope your girl is feeling better soon.

All the best.
