I thought of doing this but was worried about the nylon bits that come up from the carpet  - I do put the fluff from the tumble dryer in when I have been drying towels.

The nylon bits won't compost but I doubt you'd have so much that it's noticeable. As for the dust, just spread it out thinly, add organic matter, then another thin layer. Otherwise you've got a thick matt that won't break down easily. Been there, done that.  :D

I fell out with my dyson but the dust got composted ,now I have a cleaner that can cope with dust I cut the bottom off the dust bag and empty that into the compost.

I didn't realise that you could compost the muck out of the vacuum cleaner, today my compost bin has had a lovely great helping of dog hairs and dust, my Labrador sheds that much hair that I honestly don't know how he isn't bald.   I have five dogs - that's a lot of dog hairs!

Visited the dump the other week and couldn't help noticing a line up of 7 yellow & grey dysons that had all been 'dumped'.

Can't remember what make of hoover I have off hand, it has a paper bag that goes in the compost when it gets full and it picks up this'n'that off the carpet with a quick whoosh every now and again (generally when we are expecting visitors!)...

The dyson I had first broke down the first time I used it and regularly after that, after 1 year it couldn`t do more than 20 mins without dying, apparently we were vaccuming the wrong kind of dust(!),official. When the 2 year guarrentee ran out we got a cheaper one that works.
