yikes slow worm in the compost heap !!
« on: July 20, 2010, 13:29 »
i think its made its home there as there was also a little "burrow"  I really don't want to go near that heap (actually frightened of stabbing it with my fork!!)
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

how special is that. Enjoy the marvel that is nature even if sometimes wanting to do the right thing and not harm it seems a bit scary at first glance.

It has probably made a nest in  there. The heat helps to incubate the eggs. I had a grass snake in mine a month ago, it was a fantastic sight.

You lucky devil!!!

I'd love to have slow worms around here again. I haven't seen one in this area since I was a kid. We had them in our garden near a big pond and under stones in a rockery...that was many moons ago.

They are beautiful creatures - amazing to watch.

I think they are, like much of our once abundant wild-life, protected because of their rarity.

I am more than jealous!!

Wow!  A major slug eater ....  you are so lucky.  Treasure and protect ... you will never need another slug pellet if she sticks around.   :) :)

I have only just realised they eat slugs etc I found two earlier this year (spring time) when I was digging over a new bit they were in the long grass a tiny one and a slightly larger one, I do feel very privileged now  :)

If they are happy they are home and will not stray that far especially if they have a burrow / nest somewhere warm, safe and quiet.

You are lucky...he says slowly turning green with envy  ::)

Glad to hear slow worms are alive and well in your area, Starry -- you are so lucky.

MY DD has quite a lot in her garden and we found a small one about three inches long a couple of weeks ago, sunning itslef on a stone slab  :) :)

None here though  :(

Just to correct slow worms are live bearers...(viviparous)........they do enjoy the heat generated in compost heaps and are often found in them during the day.
