I use pencil but some times it takes a while as you have to go over what you have written several times before it shows up.

Nice soft pencil and the right sort of label helps, the glossy ones won't take pencil. A bit of spit and grit brings them up nice and clean to write on again next year.

Not sure but the pack I bought from b&q came with a pen and it doesnt seem to wash off. Pretty cheap as I remember - about a quid? Might be worth a visit for you. :)

I use a Sharpie although I mainly use labels in seed trays and not on the allotment.  I tend to raise seedlings in pots and modules rather than than sow direct and then keep a record on a spreadsheet of what everything is.

It is much easier to scrub off the permanent marker with a scouring pad than rub out pencil, strangely enough :)

Coffee stirrers and a CD marker pen - with luck you can wangle a box at a good price from your work's canteen or local caff (1000 for £1.70 from mine!)

I use wooden clothes pegs, they peg onto the loo roll inner, write on them with a freezer marker pen

this sounds like a good tip any ideas on where to get freezer markers ?

We were on a cruise in January and I helped myself to a few everytime we had a hot drink!  Goodness knows what the customs man would have thought if he had examined my case :).

The only problem was they tended to go a bit mouldy when the seed trays were in the propagator.  Maybe the compost was a bit too wet.  I took out the sticks and the seedlings were mostly okay though a couple of pots damped off.  I will definitely use them on the allotment though.

Tescos' labels when they are in are good for writing on in pencil and stayed on outside.  Looked last week for some more but they have all the easter eggs out on that section at the mo'.  They might have them in the superstores.  They were very cheap can't remember how much just now.

Have tried pencil on wooden tea stirrers but that disappeared outside.  Have tried CD writers on glossy ones outside that wiped off.  Glossy ones no good for writing on in pencil.
