What is going on with Freecycle?
« on: March 02, 2010, 18:36 »
My local Freecycle has left and become Freeble.

This is a quote from their latest newsletter. Are other groups also opting out?

For those who are reading this news for the first time there are several ressons why we moved the group away from Freecycle, the main ones are that we want LOCAL control of what we can and can't do. Also the way that group owners were treated by the Freecycle board when they spoke out for a bit more local UK control, they were told to accept a member to the group and then after making that person group owner to leave the group themselves immediately. Many of the myfreecycle groups that have sprung up when the UK groups left are moderated from America if at all and many have shall we say doubtful offers on them.

This started happening some months ago.  If you search this board you might find reference to freegle too - similar splitoff
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

In theory we now have Freecycle and Freegle in the area as the result of the big falling out last year, but the split-off Freegle is the active group as all the sign-ups were automatically transfered.  The end result is practically fine - but I must grant I am a bit un-comfortable with the uni-lateral decision making that got us where we are today.  I sort of understand the reasoning  - in so much as I read the Guardian article at the time - but would have appreciated the local mod communicating what was going on and not just doing it unilaterally and finding that things had happened to my sign up.

Having said all that for the first time - I now realise how much I appreciate the openness of John and the mods on this forum!   :D :D
