shed base information
« on: April 14, 2007, 09:04 »
Hi,

I want to put a shed in my allotment and am thinking about the types of base. I know there are several ways of doing and was thinking about laying some slabs with timber floor bearers on top. My question is: where so you get these timber treated floor bearers?

Use 3" x 3" tanalised fencing posts

Yes, that's what I used after consulting the good people on here and it works a treat.

Try your local wood yard, fencing supplier 1st, probably cheaper.

I would go 1 every foot, across the short 4' so 7 at 4' long or 4 at 8' an cut em yourself. 8' lengths will be cheaper over all as this is about your standard size. You could get away with 3 lengths of 8' if you make the spacings wider apart, depends on how much weight is going in the shed and how sturdy you feel the base is.

i've also seen huge wooden sleepers - those used for raised beds. I suppose it would be possible to use these as they are treated too wouldn't it?

We've just put a shed up on our allotment and used a tip we picked up in a book called "The Allotment Book" by Andi Clevely.  In there it suggested laying the bearers (we used 3x3" tanalised fence posts) on a gravel base.  It worked really well. is self leveling and will stay very dry.

that looks good......I was going to use slabs which is a bit more long winded. I think I could do what you have there....with pea shingle and the wood bearers on top. Thanks for all replies

Here's a tip - if you get a spirit level from the 99p shop, don't tread on it.
Just something I picked up along the way.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
