You said you were going to bed, Annie.   The Romans introduced ground elder (as a vegetable) and, according to shaun, one form of gastropod which now plagues us all ...

Garlic kills slugs.  If you use a garlic spray on plants this reduces the amount of munching by snails and slugs.   Just drop a garlic clove into a sprayer bottle of water and leave to steep and use as necessary.
New one on me ... I'll need to try that.  Seems like very little garlic - do you steep it for hours / days / weeks?

Slugs and snails

When I moved into my present home I was shocked on a warm wet evening in May to discover my front door covered in snails. At least 30, all sizes.   The next day My neighbour informed me that the last owner used to feed everything .   Cats, foxes, birds, and SNAILS.  I promise you its true .  How I do not know. But when I went to check the electric meter,   the cupboard was full of snails. Every night the path was full of snails.  I tried to squash pick up and remove even kick a few,but the snails kept on coming every night.  In the end I used Slug pellets.   The postman complained about walking on the shells, I counted over 500 in 11 days then stopped counting.  In the end the killing sickened me.  I removed a large overgrown hedge 10m x 3m deep, and slowly the snails disappeared.   One night I had to pass next doors driveway around the corner, Shock horror on every brick was a snail all heading in the same direction, his garden.  They where coming from a huge hedge across the road.  The most eerie sight in the moonlight a stream of snails slowly moving along. I kid you not.  They will be there again soon and I will take a picture.

Euggghhhh.....the image of all those snails.

When i lived at home on a wet evening the path to our front door used to be covered in snails and slugs.  Now i'm not particularly fond of either but when they crunch under your feet and you can't avoid them.  As soon as i heard the crunch my reflex action was to scream...trouble was at MN it used to wake the neighbours.  I just couldn't stand on them.....it sent shivers up my spine.

That said a big hairy spider has just walked across my keyboard!
