Hi

Sounds like a silly question but i have 8 girls (only had them 3 weeks) and thy seem very happy but all but one lay really small eggs - are they likely to get bigger or is that how they will always be?

Any ideas please?

hi there, they should gradually get bigger over the laying season, mine started out about 50g now i get 65g + and they are still in their 1st season and i have heard that they can be even bigger in their 2nd year

Thanks, thats great - at the moment they get lost in an egg cup!! but they're such characters i don't mind.

Mine too used to get lost in egg cups, but they soon got bigger  . Wait till you get a double yolker - they are huge. :happy:

My beginner girls are laying very small double yolkers! Only about 50g but long and narrow and 2 perfectly formed little yolks

Our hens all layed tiny eggs in the beginning, but equally delicious!  My Light Sussex just laid her first egg today and it was quite small compared to the egg that my Black Rock laid today, which was actually large!  Patience and time will tell!

Thanks for all those positive comments - I can't believe how much I worry about my girls  .  My next problem is working out how to give them some shade over the summer as they are on a sunny open spot, lots of room for them but sadly no trees nearby to give them shade.  need to make sure their house is not like a sauna as the weather gets better - anyone notice hat I have just presumed that we will be having a summer unlike last year

one of ours laid her 1st egg today, just seemed to fall out as she was walking on the patio.

funny thing is i actually saw it bounce when it hit the floor.
im guessing the shell will become more shell like and less rubbery the more she lays.


this is normal for a 1st egg isnt it ?
