Lawn help needed
« on: February 08, 2008, 18:27 »
We've just had people round to aerate the lawn with one of the mechanical things that digs holes into the ground. The little plugs have been left on the lawn, the man said they will be fine to leave to gradually dissolve back into the lawn with rain or we can compost them.

We had it done mainly because our year old back lawn was very wet and retained lots of water.

Should we be sweeping sand into the holes that are left to improve drainage? If so what sand do we use? :?

It's been along while since I've done lawn care, but I'd say no to the sand, the idea is to allow air, water and fertilizer to penetrate into the turf, lawns tend to suffer a lot from compaction and aerating helps address this problem roots need to breath too  :D

Cheers Rich - new I could rely on you!

My neighbour (the sort that is out manicuring his lawn every other day with his nail scissors!!) mentioned to hubby about brushing sand into it.

That's a few quid saved for the lottie then!!  :D

It was all the rage to brush sand into the holes years ago. If memory serves, it was to stop the holes from closing up. we still do on fine turf ( golf courses, bowling greens ect ), but don't bother on longer grass, but I would remove the cores of soil, just so it doesn't look untidy.
