Buying native plants for hedging
« on: February 07, 2008, 20:54 »
I want to plant a mixed native hedge. I want hawthorn , wayfarers tree. blackthorn and alder. When I go to the garden centre all I can see are bundles of ten of hawthorn and privet and beech .Does anyone know where I can buy individual ones in pots. I know they will be more expensive but I can buy just what I need.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago

That's a great idea - I've been toying with the thought of planting a hedge at the lottie (have privet all around the house front and rear) and I hadn't thought of looking at a GC

Do you know anyone with any of these hedges near to you?  If so, perhaps you could get some cuttings and propagate these?

Do a online search Ruby some nurserys will sell them at one year olds bare rooted so they are cheap, called whips locally, ( try googling that !    ) I bought our hawthorn hedge for about a £1 a plant planted em by poking a hole with a jemmy bar and dropping them in, they all grew.

Yes, you go to a nursery near you, you'll be amased. Yo buy lots of a year old you get them at some 46p. A few years back price.

Much wider choice, too. 8)

take hardwood cuttings now - clean them up - stick them in a cuttings bed - save yourself a fortune

as for garden centres - forget them go for specialist trade nurseries - and tell them you are a landscape gardener - got a few big jobs on - but only need a handful of samples - do a quick deal - don't forget to negotiate a discount for your pending order   - job done

Thanks for the ideas. Perhaps i would do better at a wildflower centre than a garden centre there would be more choice  :)

Hi Ruby,

We bought some mixed hedging from hedging.co.uk

They do a good selection and have cost/quantity calculators plus plenty of info.

Good luck with whatever you decide. Every bit of native hedgerow helps.

Rob

I don't think so.  We tried a few years ago and buy the time you have prepared a cutting bed, found good stock, taken extra in case some don't root, kept the pigeons off and waited year for them to grow on you might as well have gone and bought them.  Don't know what they are now, but we go 1,000 mixed plants to do one sidfe of the plots here (they back on to an estate....) for about £250 last year from Ashridge Trees - they all grew away a treat and inanother year we will have a proper barrier.
Good luck
John
