We have oriental poppies in our garden, and our favourite is one called Turkenlouis, if that's how it's spelled, I can't remember. We look forward to the first one every year, the colour hits you right between the eyes, and they have a lovely fringed edge to the petals. Our little granddaughter says that the fallen petals are 'ladybirds'.
Just Giggled it and it is lovely! Now - where can I put one!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Having only moved into my house (or should that read GARDEN?!) back in November, this is the first summer I've spent here. I've watched as one of my neighbours giant poppies put on a spectacular display and have been pleased to find the odd welsh poppy (I think that's what they are, the small yellow ones), one or two regular poppies but most surprisingly a rather beautiful purple poppy just by the gate to the road. I have my eye on the seed heads and plan on 'saving' them as soon as they've dried out a bit. Would I be best collecting them now to dry in the house or leave them on the plant until the sun has done it's work?

I'd leave them on the poppy. Is the purple one a big one or more of a wild-looking one? If the latter I think it's like the opium poppy. The little yellow ones are Welsh poppies and I have them as well as orange ones all over.

Thank you for the reply, it's certainly not a big ornamental one, it does look a little on the wild-side. I'll see if I can get a photo uploaded shortly :)

Hopefully I've managed to attach a photo of the roadside purple poppy...

I have never heard of a bread seed poppy? Going to have to Google that. I know l used to get a lot like that in my garden. I had grown a lot of large almost black ones once and the next year l started getting lots like the ones in your photo. I assumed the seed had come from the black ones as they never self seeded and grew true. I never did mind what came up though as l just loved poppies! :)

I'm sure its a form of wild poppy as I used to see them on an unkempt area at the hospital where I worked.
