Kale glut
« on: August 01, 2013, 20:48 »
I've got lots of kale in the front garden

The cabbage whites have laid eggs on the red russian kale (haven't looked at the black kale yet) so need to get them stored before they hatch and eat all the leaves.  It's also bolting anyway

So, how do I store it in the freezer?  Whole leaves or chopped?  Blanched, cooked, or nothing?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I take out the centre rib as it's not so nice once thawed. Wash very carefully to get out all the nasties.

Also, if you have any way to dehydrate things, you can do kale leaves, kale chips, you can also powder the kale leaves to sprinkle on all sorts of dishes - salads, smoothies, soups, etc.

Mrs Growster often puts a couple of kale leaves in the blender when she makes soup.

How about stripping out the leaves from the stems, liquidising them with something, then storing them as flat packs in the freezer?

Hmm, lots of good ideas thanks all  :D

No dehydrator and will think further about liquidising, but in the meantime I shall de-rib before freezing the leaves I need to harvest tomorrow and harvested yesterday.

Definitely washing properly and scrutinising well - the leaves are pretty flat but there's cabbage white eggs or caterpillars on the underside
