I couldn't believe the huge amount of lettuce leaves growing in a tray in Morrisons for just £1. I couldn't resist as this is cheaper than buying the seeds. As I have had limited success growing salad leaves this year (again) rocket, red lettuce-I have decided to split these bought plants into  pots with deeper soil and keep them going.

Anyone else tried this with success ?

They will have been grown in a warm greenhouse so may well die if you put them outside.

auntie,funny you posted this,next door plot lady ate hers planted stumps under make shift little poly, been watching it get higher for weeks. shouted over sunday she,s got a brill crop of megga leaves gave me what  looked like lollo rosso and green crinkle lettuce, going to do the same.

I always keep mine and after harvesting the leaves I put them into a big grow bag I keep for this purpose, after a few weeks they grow on well and bridge the gap between mine growing big enough, as Aunty says though you need to acclimatize them.

I also look out for pots of herbs that are being sold off as past the use by date, Basil usually gives me one look and dies but I plant out coriander and parsley and they always give me a good crop.

I split parsley pots into four and plant them as clumps -- does well planted about 2 ins deep

I visited my stepdad on the weekend and he was having a go growing a few crops. He had this lush lettuce, some purple some green, so crisp and yummy  . I asked him how he managed to grow it so well, and it turns out he bought a 99p salad tray from Lidl (the ones for eating, not growing on) and separated and planted the individual plantlets. Within around 3 weeks he had around 12, yes 12 full size lettuces - woweee!

They do them in Tescies too and I think they're great for filling up spaces.    Would be nice if they did different mixes though...

Worked for me when the slugs enjoyed my seed tray full. Get them used to being outside first but, if well watered, they quickly grow on. Easy.

Good for you... but it's another mile cycle from Tess-thing but probably better value.

I did this last year with success and did it again last week with Lidl living salad.
I just put them straight out onto the plot in some gaps. It should be warm enough now.
I don't have great luck with lettuce from seed so this in my opinion saves a lot of fuss.
They looked sad for a couple of days, but now have perked up and looking like they will be decent plants.
You should expect 50+ plants from a decent tray.

At the moment, Tesco are doing the living salad for £1 each or buy two for £1 so, 50p a tray for 100+ lettuce plants.
