Allotment Main Path Ideas
« on: April 15, 2013, 19:02 »
Hello,

We had our general allotment meeting the other day with the council and one thing we brought up was the path, it is just mud and weedy etc and gets very slippy when wet. We are looking for good cheap ways of getting this going. Its big I would say 70m long and 1m wide.

Any ideas would be great?

Thanks!
Kind Regards
Bill

One suggestion is to level to ground and compact it down, put down landscape quality weed suppressant membrane (which you can get at 1m width and many lengths, quite reasonable cost on ebay) then add about 5cm of woodchip (usually available from tree surgeons, or local councils, often free)

This then just need topping up every year or two with fresh woodchip

Hope that is helpful

The only problem with woodchip is that it rots down very quickly, if you have cars/traffic etc using the pathway then it wouldn't last long. We had this problem on our site several years ago and our local Council had some road plainings delivered and levelled off for us. If you are very lucky you can obtain road plainings free, it's just knowing where to get them  ;)

It's 1 meter wide. What car is going to get down that path.

It was a general comment for ANYONE wanting advice for any size of allotment access route. The point being that even for allotment sites like my own that do have wide enough pathways/roadways for vehicle access, road plainings are durable enough and cheap.

But it was a specific question.

Woodchip all the way. We've got a similar problem on ours, and similar dimensions. Now all we have to do is agree to do it... should be done in about 3 years then...:nowink:
