washing chickens
« on: January 20, 2008, 07:28 »
Morning All,

The recent severe rain has resulted in Marge and Gandhi looking very sorry for themselves due to mattered feathers. Both really need a good wash, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might use in the water that's both safe and will remove the mud?

Many thanks

Mambo

When I've had to wash one of my chooks (for hygiene reasons) I used just a few drops of baby shampoo in warm water and rinsed with plain warm water.

Knew id read it somewhere :)

I had to wash one of my chooks and used a bowl of warm water with some baby shampoo.  I got my OH to hold her gently while I sponged her down but after a few seconds he didn't have to hold her, she was actually very calm and seemed to be enjoying it     Make sure you get her nice and dry afterwards though before you let her out :)

You've got a good memory Louise.  Baby shampoo is so mild it won't strip the oil off their feathers and make the leaky
