Egg colour

Hi all

a quick question for you regarding the colour of eggs.  We've got Tori, a white wyandotte who lays beige coloured eggs, Lacey, a gold laced wyandotte who lays very pale and shiny (almost china like) eggs and Fifi, a barnebar who lays lovely dark brown eggs.  However, we've noticed that Fifi's egg shells are not very often all brown, instead they tend to have a section of dark brown then a ring of a different shade then a section of light brown.  It's almost as if she has stopped laying part way through to change her ink pot

Can anyone tell me what causes the hens to lay different coloured eggs and what may be making Fifi eggs multishaded?

Thanks in advance.

RR

Hi RR.

The eggshell colour is genetically determined but here's a more detailed explanation of the ins and outs.
