Title: Spinach
Post by: Elaine G on March 21, 2019, 13:59
Anyone have advice about spinach please. Have just bought a packet of lazio from Wilkinson. I’ve never grown it before so what will eat/ attack it and is it better grown under enviromesh with everything else 😀

Thanks
Elaine

I have to net spinach or it gets eaten by either munjac deer or wood pigeons.  I never seem to have issues with the smaller pests that need enviromesh to keep them out.

Slugs and snails do eat seedlings and young plants, but seem to leave it alone once it grows  :)

I also find woodpigeons eat the leaves, so netting against them helps you get a good crop to eat.

The only other thing is to remember how much spinach wilts down, and a whole carrier bagful turns to two healthy portions! So do sow plenty  :D

As said, net it against the birds and I shove a few slug pellets down when I plant out the seedlings. And definitely plant out way more than you think you need if you're cooking it :D

I'd go for at least 4 times as much ;)
