pulling out feathers and eating them
« on: April 12, 2010, 17:55 »
Hello, can any one please advise I have three rescue hens which are still quite bald on their back and bums, feathers are slowly coming through but Tallulah who is bottom of the 'pecking order' is having a hard time because the other two are pulling any feathers out which start to show, they are also pulling out her tail feathers, they then eat the feathers. I have sprayed her 3 days ago with anti peck spray, and again today it doesn't seem to help!!Are they lacking in a mineral?

they might need a bit more protein - some people give them a little bit of fish flavoured cat food to help them. What are you feeding them on at the moment?
Staffies are softer than you think.

I know dizzie lizzie who has several ex batts and also looks after some of the worse ones that come out until they are ready to go to new homes feeds hers on allen and page exbatts feed as I think this may be higher in protein for them.

OK I'll get some of the ex-batts feed and also some of the cat food and hopefully that will sort the problem out! before she loses her tail!Thank you for your advice

If that fails then you can get beak clips from the domestic fowl trust (I think mine cost me £1 for 8 including postage), this stops feather pulling and pecking but allows them to still eat and drink  :)
