Shallots from seed
« on: January 06, 2009, 19:51 »
I have seen a couple of packs of different shallot seeds today and is said each seed produces one bulb. Will they divide in subsequent years like regular shallots or are they really just small onions? One pack was banana shallots and the other was prisma f1, both by T&M. I already have some sets on order but would love to start my own from seed as I get a kick out of the whole seed germinating and nurturing thing :)

I haven't been successful with any onions from seeds other than accidentally creating some silver onion sets during the hot July of 2005. I forgot about the seed tray and when I found it all dried up later in the year I had some dry onion sets. I never got to try them properly but when I put a couple in a pot they sprouted back into life.

I know it doesn't help you but thought I'd tell you anyway :)

I've never tried them from seed but I can't see why they would not divide over the years, might take a 2nd growing year tho'

I've been wondering this for a while now, so have just done a bit of research (finally ;) ) and yes they should divide in the second season.

Quote
The shallot differs
from the common onion in that its
bulb divides into multiple sections as
garlic does.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I think I read somewhere that shallots grown from seed go to seed in their second year like onoins from seed. They split into several but go to seed. Not sure where it was. I may be wrong?

I tried the Banana shallot from seed last year
If the growing season had been less unpredictable and warmer I reckon the crop would have been reasonable
As it was I got an odd kind of spring onion
And I should have sowed them in a seed tray first

I have never seen Banana shallots sold as sets
Has anyone else?
