Re the above.

Where can you buy it from?  I have just bought a paraffin heater for the greenhouse, with no thought of where to get the stuff from :?

Some petrol stations still sell it from the pump ( very few ) or try your local  hardware shop  they often do to.

Nearly every petrol station sells it in plastic bottles, they do near me anyay, it is also for sale in most supermarkets, again maybe only near me. It may be a very popular commodity around here.

I own a DIY shop and we sell Paraffin at £5.99 for 4 litres.  BE WARNED it will soon disappear as the next stage up inthe distillation process is aviation fuel for which they can get far more money!

Paraffin is also know as Kerosene. Hence the aviation link.

another warning is all paint will be water based by 2010 as white spirit will be banned as along the paraffin it is next in the chain. Australia is already water based paint only.

At one time paraffin was a popular heat source for houses. It was cheap but it was a bit smelly. As the popularity has fallen, the availability has declined but I think it will be going for longer than Wighty seems to think.

Our allotment shop has it in a big container and sells it from the barrel.

My FIL has a huge paraffin heater for his garage helps dry the buses after they have been resprayed, looks a bit like a jet engine ! I don't think we'll loose paraffin, but the paint's been on the cards for years. I'll be stocking up on some decent gloss before that goes.

As a retired decorator and at one time a Forestry Worker, I question if this is really a green option? Water based paints will not protect wood like the oil based paints. If you don't believe it, look around you when in town and see how many Victorian sliding sash windows there are still around. How elastic is the water based paint, how will it stand up to the swelling and shrinking due to the weather conditions? Will we need to cut down more trees to replace the rotten wood?
