Apart from the overwinter onions, garlic and shallots, my plot is now looking rather bare having lifted the last of the swedes and beetroots yesterday... except for a row of rainbow chard which looks as good as it did in the height of summer.

Why aren't the supermarket shelves full of this stuff?

It's versatile, fast growing, really tasty, winter hardy, pest and disease free and it looks great too. Showing no signs of going to flower, it looks like it's going to go on and on. Wonderful stuff.

What's been your best grow this year?

The supermarkets only stock what sells - anything off the main staples isn't of interest. Not that I can get my family to eat chard (or any cabbage but red) and it took 8 years to get them to eat sprouts.

We of the allotment fraternity know and try many more things than the supermarket.

It's been a generally good all round year and the freezer has plenty in it with some bits still to come off the plots.

None of my summer stuff was up to much, but my winter brassicas are brilliant this year.
Beautiful Brussels - first time ever! Tundra cabbage, and Kale are really looking good, and I've some big  swedes,as well.
Even the leeks which were planted really late (couldn't make the holes earlier because the clay was like concrete) are catching up

Onions have been our Star of the Year. Glorious, huge, golden Globo onions grown from seed. Just beautifully sweet and juicy too.

Coming a close second were French beans, with dwarf ones cropping for weeks and the climbing varieties producing loads while the runner beans sulked

Third place goes to cauliflowers, which we harvested for months on end.. nver had a glut of cauliflowers before!

I tried growing Uchiki Kuri squash up a teepee, a la Monty Don - and it worked!  Looked really cool too and no squash monster invasion of the rest of the garden. Not a great year for quantity, but the quality was fab.

Also the tomatoes and chillies were, as expected, marvellous in the greenhouse.  The new Quad Grows helped a lot with the watering.

  Not a lot this year, Onions probably the best most consistant.
Sweet corn was good
Toms n Cukes were hit and miss.

Carrots and beetroot were the best ever, Savoy cabbages huge, winter squashes were smaller than usual but packed full of flavour from the sunshine, tomatoes were ripe and delicious with no blight - everything else was a bit hit and miss (either not so good a crop or a good tasting crop but smaller or over a shorter period).

Considering I only started in July, I have masses of Kale.

A new grandson 😂, gardening wise going completely no dig at the plot. Tomatoes were a fantastic crop, well over 100lb, mostly ripened in the conservatory off the vine as the vines succumbed to disease in August (not blight). Carrots have been great & so easy to harvest with no dig once the weather changed to wet!

Highlights were - cucumber (never had so many) tomatoes (just finishing the last of the crop ripening indoors) raspberries and blackcurrants, Filderkraut cabbage courgettes and leeks. Potatoes poor, other root veg only so so. Some nice chrysanthemums.

I managed to grow a few decent carrots, for only about the second time in five years.

The little gem squash went into overdrive thanks to the hot dry summer. I grow them for a couple of friends, at one point one of them had too many and had to give some to her daughter.

I'm just thankful we had some good crops despite the dry summer probably not as good as some of you have had but then there's always another year when we get a little older and a little more wiseacre

but if I really had to choose my highlight sweetcorn best we have ever grew

The highlight of the year for me was finding a source of bulk compost. I could have made enough myself, eventually, but a slow process. The walled veg plot is now in really good shape for next year. It was fun moving 10 tonnes of compost.
