Tap on Water Butt
« on: October 14, 2013, 14:44 »
Has anyone been able to replace a tap on a large green water butt single-handedly. If so how?

I dont have a 14ft arm span, and without throwing in a small child armed with a wrench, I am at a loss how to do it. Any clues?

I used mole grips lashed to a broom handle to hold the nut, and tightened it by revolving the tap rather than the nut - fiddly but do-able as long as you don't clamp the nut too tightly or you'll have trouble getting the grips off afterwards!

An adjustable spanner would also do the trick, but you may have to use a weak glue like bostik to make sure the nut doesn't fall out of the jaws but can still be released.

(It was the plastic nut rather than the tap which split in my case - I used the appropriately sized BSP brass equivalent as a replacement which was much stronger.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

small child and wrench does work. My neighbour is also quite slim (relative to me) so can get head and shoulders in the blue barrels I use. As others said turn the tap to tighten not the nut

My water butts have wide open tops so I can dunk a watering can into them - I find that easier / quicker than waiting for a tap to fill one.

No help with this question though (particularly if tap needed for connection to hose or similar)

That chap's tap assembly is a bit posher (and easier to fit) than on my 3 butts, which all have two-piece plastic taps with the nuts on the inside rather than outside the butt.

Ring spanner and heavy grease (open gear grease) works well. . . .well it does on aircraft!

I use the breaker bar (2 foot long) with the large socket that coincidentally is the same size as the front wheel bearing nut on my car. then have the butt on its side on the ground so I can reach both the end of the breaker bar to hold it and the tap, though the breaker bar could also be duct taped to a longer stick or slid into a pipe.

I`m a dunker too ! Life is too short to wait for a can to fill through the butt tap ! :)

Spanner taped on a stick is my way of putting on a new tap.

I use the small boy method at the moment he does a great job  :)

Used the same method on my kayak for some bolts, it earned him extra pocket money  ;)

I have a similar problem and oddly hadn't though of the small boy approach. My nephew will love this!
