Protecting Peas in the ground
« on: April 03, 2012, 14:41 »
Can anyone tell me please,

if peas are soaked in paraffin before planting  will it prevent mice from eating them?

If so how long should the peas be in soak?.

Thank you Trevor.

I don't do it myself, but it's generally reckoned overnight.

I use well weighted down debris netting to protect my initial sowings.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The mice go for the smell of the germinating peas -  masking this with another smell like paraffin stops them digging your peas up. I have found that dusting with curry powder or spraying the ground with chilli sauce solution also does the job. Once the peas are up they tend to just leave them alone until the peas actually form.

I think it's fair to say that paraffin has not proved an unmitigated success story on here.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

A few of my fellow lotty peeps tend to start them of in modules or old guttering putting them out when nice sized seedlings because mice have pinched all past sowings!!

My dad uses paraffin and he hasnt had any mice probs so far - I dont fancy it myself so ive starting mine of in wee pots.

Big ben Im wondering what the slugs might make of this  :D

I would only expect mouse problems with early sowings. We are now into April and mice will have turned their attention to producing more mice.
