Tea Bag Tip
« on: March 16, 2011, 20:51 »
Sorry if this has been mentioned before but I got told it a few years ago and always do it, so nice and simple here goes:

When you have finished with you tea bag place a lettuce seed in( i use the wife tweezers - she don'tknow!!) , put in your window cill and plant out when big enough ;)  Means you can space you plants without thinning 8) saving seed.

It should also mean you get lettuce throught the season and not a glut of them all at once however we all know a day of rain, bit of sun and they all catch up with each other!

Gosh, I'd be sowing 10 lettce a day if I used every teabag  -- thats just wot I drink.  seriously though I read that years ago but never tried it.  Bet that works good for spring onions, maybe putting 3 or 4 seeds in each and planting close together  -  or beetroot  -spinach - and saves on compost

That's a neat trick, hope your wife doesn't read the forum

Not all tea bags compost fully so I'd be worried that the roots of the plant couldn't grow through to the soil - have you encountered this problem?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Then there's the question of what size tea-bags. They differ considerably from one brand to another.

Tea-leaves are great for camellias...   ;)

Great idea - I'll try it!

Another use for a tea bag is to drop one in the flower pot to stop compost falling out of the little hole, and also help with water saokage from below.

We have found this. I make couple of small cuts in the tea bag, not on the edges, and then roots have a way through and the tea bag breaks down quicker.

This could turn into a thread of PG tips, and will we find that Yorkshire tea is preferred  :D

Thank you Savbo!

Drying them can be a pain, as they often go mouldy. So, squeeze them as much as you can, then loosely spread them around a sieve or a colander, and stand them over a radiator. That should dry them enough before you need them.

Oh man!! Don't know what to do with the tea bags now, usually dry them and put dired leaves around blueberries but loving the idea of the lettuce.  Thats a anice easy one for the kids too.  Might just have to give it a go  :)
